Washington Surveying and Rating Bureau (WSRB) have completed their evaluation of the fire protection capabilities of Douglas Okanogan County Fire District 15 as they relate to fire insurance rating.

The Public Protection Classification (PPC) for Douglas Okanogan County Fire District 15 has improved from protection 9 to protection class 8, effective January 1, 2010. Protection class 8 will apply to properties located within 5 road miles of a responding fire station and having standard hydrant distribution and water supply.

The reduction in protection class for property owners was one of the goals when the district ran and voters approved the successful bond proposal in 2006. The bond provided funds to help the district purchase a new class A engine for the Methow station, new type 6 brush trucks and a new rescue engine for the Brewster station and a new fire station in Pateros. It also allowed the district to move a class A engine over to the Rocky Butte station to help in that service area. The new equipment along with the improved record keeping, training and recruitment of volunteers all were factors in lowering the classification.

The new classification could mean cheaper fire insurance for district property owners. WSRB recommends residents of the district contact their insurance agents to determine the relative effect the new protection class will have on their insurance premiums. "One of the keys in promoting the bonds was to lower the protection classification; it's nice to see it become a reality." Fire District Administrator Bill Vallance said. "We owe a lot to the volunteers of the district for their efforts, so make sure to thank them."
